We do not train our models on your business data by default

By default, we do not use your business data for training our models. If you have explicitly opted in to share your data with us (for example, through our opt-in feedback mechanisms) to improve our services, then we may use the shared data to train our models.

Connectors enable ChatGPT to send and retrieve information from connected internal sources and third-party applications, including to help provide more context for its responses. Your workspace admins can control which connectors are enabled for your workspace. ChatGPT respects your organization's existing permissions, and each end user is required to authenticate with a connected application before use. We do not train our models on any business data accessed from connectors. Learn more about connectors.

Yes, you can adapt certain models to specific tasks by fine-tuning them with your own prompt-completion pairs. Your fine-tuned models are for your use alone and never served to or shared with other customers or used to train other models. Data submitted to fine-tune a model is retained until the customer deletes the files.

OpenAI trains its models in two stages. First, we learn from a large amount of data. Then, we use data from ChatGPT users and human trainers to make sure the outputs are safe and accurate and to improve their general capabilities. Learn more about our training process.

OpenAI uses data from different places including public sources, licensed third-party data, and information created by human reviewers. We also use data from versions of ChatGPT and DALL·E for individuals. By default, business data from ChatGPT Team, ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and the API Platform (after March 1, 2023) isn't used for training our models, unless you have explicitly opted in to share your data with us to improve the services.

One of the most useful and promising features of AI models is that they can improve over time. We continuously improve our models through research breakthroughs as well as exposure to real-world problems and data. When you share your content with us, it helps our models become more accurate and better at solving your specific problems and it also helps improve their general capabilities and safety. We don't use your content to market our services or create advertising profiles of you—we use it to make our models more helpful. ChatGPT, for instance, improves by further training on the conversations people have with it, unless you opt out. When you use our services for individuals such as ChatGPT, Sora, or Operator, we may use your content to train our models. You can opt out of training through our privacy portal by clicking on "do not train on my content." To turn off training for your ChatGPT and Operator conversations, follow the instructions in our Data Controls FAQ. Once you opt out, new conversations will not be used to train our models. When you use ChatGPT, you can also use Temporary Chat from the dropdown. Chats from Temporary Chat won't appear in history, use or create memories, or be used to train our models. Sora has separate controls, and you can similarly turn off training in the Sora Settings menu. Additionally, if you opt out of training through our privacy portal, this will apply to Sora too. (Note that adjusting your settings in the ChatGPT interface will not affect your Sora settings, however.) We retain certain data from your interactions with us, but we take steps to reduce the amount of personal information in our training datasets before they are used to improve and train our models. This data helps us better understand user needs and preferences, allowing our model to become more efficient over time.
